Your Ambition is Killing You

Writer: Nydia Elena GarciaNydia Elena Garcia

I'm the biggest hater of click-bait article titles like this one. Chances are though - if I hadn't started off with a strong claim you wouldn't be reading this important news I'm about to share.

The truth is women in leadership are being hit like a semi-truck every day and frankly I'm tired of witnessing it.

If I hear one more, "Me too," I swear I'm going to scream. And I'm not talking about what you think I am.

I'm talking about autoimmune issues before age 40. To be specific, I'm talking about issues like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Sjögren’s and celiac disease. Sprinkle a lupus in there and we almost have a full house.

When I go for appetizers and dinner with girlfriends let me tell you I'm biting my tongue when I hear chit chat about issues that might be underlying autoimmune issues being mistreated as something else.

The truth is, 1 in 15 people in the United States have autoimmune diseases and 78% of people with autoimmune diseases are women. Here's the kicker -

Long-term stress (hello- leadership!) is a proven contributor to autoimmune illnesses.

While symptoms of autoimmune issues may vary, it is important to consult with a doctor if you are concerned about changes you are experiencing.

Here's the good news -

You DO NOT have to quit to get the work life balance you are wanting for your health reasons.

You DO need a solid self care strategy though. One that is realistic and goal-oriented. Plus a strategy incorporating proven benefits for mind, body, soul and spirit.

Take a deep breath. You've got this.

And if you don't know where to start taking care of your health goals - reach out to me. I would love to help get you started!
